about

I am inspired by the mythology of Cernunnos: The god of the forest, protector of animals, also seen as a god of life, death, and rebirth. Versions of this powerful deity can be found all throughout Celtic culture and in many cultures throughout the world. I present Cernunnos as a solo fiddle pìobaireachd which was originally music for the highland bagpipe called Ceòl Mòr (literally big music). They consist of an ùrlar (ground theme) and are followed by many variations before returning to the ùrlar. Many fiddle pìobaireachd were written in the 18th century after the Battle of Culloden in 1746. My composition imagines a journey through the forest realm of Cernunnos and encountering the god who asks us to dance with him in the grove. He teaches us how to care for the forest and animals and its great importance to our planet.
